He was the Holy Roman Emperor, King of Croatia, Bohemia and Hungary and the Arch Duke of Austria – and now King Rudolf II has a connection with the North East.

The king bought the Krusovice brewery back in 1553, crowning it “the Royal Czech Beer.”

And on what would have been his 446th birthday on 18 July a very special celebration is being held in honour.

Antler Bar, at 55 Degrees North, Newcastle is the only venue in the region to offer Krusovice fresh tank beer and the only new bar across the UK that will sell it in 2018.

And Gary Hutchinson, who runs Chrysalis Leisure which owns Antler and the Buddha restaurant at the same site, believes it is cause for celebration.

“Krusovice is a fantastic, award-winning beer and we are delighted to be the only bar in Newcastle to offer it,” he said.

“So it seems only right that on what was King Rudolf’s birthday, we give everyone the opportunity to celebrate.”

Antler has come up with a range of special offers which will run on the day from noon which includes two pints of Krusovice snowboots for £8.95p and a pint of Krusovice and any schnitzel dish off the main menu for £14.95p.

The bar has also created its very own Bohemia cocktail special for £6.95p – a mix of vodka, white wine, raspberry syrup and lemonade with edible flowers.
