New Newcastle Choir
Some Voices, the UK’s most exciting contemporary choir, is coming to Newcastle in January 2020.
After taking London by storm and growing to nearly 1,000 members, Some Voices is launching its first non-auditioned choir outside the capital in Newcastle, this year.
Rehearsals start on Tuesday 28th January 2020, 19:30 at Blackfriars @ Ouseburn and will be led by director Lea Cornthwaite known for his work with Opera North, ENO, the LSO, Sing Up, Glyndebourne and Mind & Soul choir amongst others. As it is a non-auditioned choir, no previous experience is required and songs are learned by ear so reading music is not necessary
Musical Director and Founder, Laura Howe, is originally from Newcastle so it was only a matter of time before a branch opened up in its new city home. “Every voice is welcome at Some Voices. Singing together is a great way to make friends in a big city and de-stress at the end of a busy working day. We are all about raising the roof by belting out tunes with spirit and soul, so I know Newcastle and the North East is going to be where it is at!” she says.
Each 10-week themed term ends with a final performance where the audience sings songs from an eclectic mix of pop, rock, folk, hip-hop, Motown and more. This term’s theme is entitled ‘Sweet Dreams’ and will journey between fantasy and reality with songs from the Eurythmics, Kate Bush, Hozier and Bjork amongst others. Each term, choir member select a charity to raise money towards. Some Voices has been described by Time Out as “London’s coolest choir” and by The Guardian as feeling “less like a choir and more like the closest you might get to being a rock star.” In December 2019, Some Voices recorded a cover of ‘Feel Good Inc’ by Gorillaz for BBC One’s Christmas advert #XmasLife. Other past performances have included Festival of Voice, The Big Feastival, Backyard Cinema and many more.
