The continued success of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United team isn’t just great news for the long-suffering Toon Army, but also for the city of Newcastle. Geordies are naturally happy people. But when their football team is doing well, Geordies can get buzzing, which is great news for the city’s bars and restaurants.

Newcastle United are now competing in the Champions League, so the city is set to get another huge boost with overseas fans visiting, spending money, and further boosting the economy.

Over the next few weeks, the city will be welcoming fans from Paris, Dortmund, and Milan. And if the team qualifies from their Champions League group, there could be more visitors arriving in the new year.

Can Newcastle United qualify from their Champions League group?

The bookmakers make Eddie Howe’s team 25/1 to win the Champions League, and they are 9/4 to win Group F. Manchester City are the overall betting favourites at 2/1. In the latest football fixtures betting odds, Newcastle are 7/4 to win their opening Champions League match, away to AC Milan. A betting calculator can be used to help better understand the odds, and how they work.

To further explain the team’s chances of success, they are the second favourites to win Group F. PSG are the favourites to win at 11/10. Then it’s Eddie Howe’s Newcastle at 9/4, with AC Milan at 5/1, and Borussia Dortmund at 11/2.

The top two teams in the group qualify for the next round. So as second favourites, the bookmakers think Newcastle will do it.

Nights for the city to look forward to

The first visitors to Newcastle are on 4th October when the football club hosts PSG on Matchday 2 of the Champions League group stage. With Paris just a short flight away, the city’s bars and restaurants can expect a healthy influx of Parisians looking to sample Newcastle’s best pubs and eateries.

On 25th October the visitors will be Borussia Dortmund on Matchday 3. Dortmund are likely to bring a decent-sized following of fans as the German club is one of the best-supported teams in Europe.

Finally, AC Milan will visit Newcastle on 13th December for Matchday 6. As the final match in the group stages, this could be the fixture that decides whether Newcastle get through to the next round. Although Milan might not be as well supported as Borussia Dortmund, if the Italians are in with a chance of progressing to the next round, they could well sell out their allocation of tickets, giving another welcome boost to the city’s economy just ahead of the Christmas rush.

Success on the pitch is good for the whole city

As a one-club city, businesses in Newcastle know how important the football team is to the local economy. The feel-good factor that success on the football pitch brings cannot be underestimated. It’s not just good for fans wanting to celebrate a win with a drink or a meal. It’s also good for productivity, with happier workers.

If Newcastle United can continue to grow under the leadership of Eddie Howe, and become one of England’s elite clubs, then the city of Newcastle as a whole will only continue to benefit. So here’s to the team’s continued success on the pitch.
