TAKE A POLAR EXPEDITION AT THE LIT & PHIL
ewcastle’s own secret library The Lit & Phil invites you to take a trip to the South Pole this January in the company of a survivor of Captain Scott’s ill-fated expedition 108 years ago. Going South! – A tale of truly heroic failure will be performed THIS WEEK, 15 & 16 January 2020.
CaroleW Productions’ first partnership with the Lit & Phil is a tragic, comic and moving theatrical show of derring-do and camaraderie. Going South! is a one-man comedic storytelling show written and performed by Craig Methven of Back of the Attic Theatre, based on the true story of Scott’s ill-fated expedition. The show follows ‘Cherry’s’ attempts to make sense of the tragic loss of his friends, and the failure of the expedition, while also trying to add a touch of humour and entertain the audience who have come to hear a Great British hero, as he stands in for the dead Captain on his ‘victory’ tour!
Going South! charts Cherry’s efforts to tell his story and that of his fellow explorers, and in doing so asks questions about our ability to be true, open and honest with each other, and how this is impacted by the way we construct images of heroism and bravery. It features original songs, comedy and juggling routines, and one accidental burlesque number, as Cherry stumbles towards opening up to other people for the first time.
CaroleWears, director of CaroleW productions, said: “Since its inception in 1793, The Lit & Phil, Newcastle’s secret library, has hosted a range of luminaries from the fields of science, the natural sciences, philosophy and history, so what better place to host the gallant hero of the play? This is a wonderfully entertaining, but also thought-provoking production – it explores, questions and celebrates the ways we use comedy as a shield, asking what our desire to keep laughing and to keep people laughing does, and how this creates barriers to emotional expression and personal honesty. Above all though, it will of course provide audiences with a good night out!”
A hidden gem in the heart of the city, The Lit & Phil houses nearly 200,000 books. The library is FREE to explore and open to all. It is a beautiful, magical place to escape to and relax in. Anyone may come and browse at any time within library opening hours. Comfortable seating abounds and refreshments and gifts are available.
Going South! is presented by CaroleW Productions and Back of the Attic. It appears at The Lit & Phil on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 January 2020 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10/£8.
