The Ladyboys of Bangkok
A Review by Sam Nelson
The Ladyboys of Bangkok arrived in Newcastle this week with their large pink tent to present their Wonder Woman 20th anniversary tour.
The wonder woman tour oozes comedy, glamour and razzle dazzle. A fabulous combination of classic acts, hysterical twists, showbiz impersonations and laugh out loud comedy. Superheroes of all aspects are featured throughout the show however proportion wise there is a whole lot more packed in to make a side splitting interactive show full of surprises and well known and eclectic mix of music to sing your heart out from Shirly Bassey and Abba through to Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. One for all generations (over 18’s only).
We made our way to times square of which was the venue for this years instalment of the show. It was buzzing with ticket holders showing excitement in anticipation of the show. The large pink tent stands tall with the box office to the right and a large sculpture at the entrance. Security are efficient and safety conscious checking bags upon entry and enforcing disposal of any drinks you take with you. Confident of our safety we entered into a spacious area containing a bar and freshly cooked Thai food which smelled divine, queues were minimal and a large block of toilets stand to the rear (no pun intended). A nice touch also was that upon showing our ticket we were shown to our table, which made us and all audience members definitely feel welcome and no lost time in finding our table.
The show opens with an amazing song and the ladyboys looking fabulous in floor length gowns and capes shortly revealing an alternative outfit hiding underneath as they work the crowd who clap along. The detail in the costume across all the ladyboys was to be seen and very detailed. These Lady Boys know their fashion for sure!
The show becomes interactive in the following act as a lucky audience member joins the stage for a hysterical take of Shirly Bassey, the ladyboy performing during this time proves to be a hilarious performer throughout the entire show. Risqué but tasteful jests come forth as well as sing a long classics in a heart stopping show which will leave you on your feet, sore cheeks – of the face (again no pun intended) and full of applause.
It is incredibly difficult to think of just one favourite in terms of acts, there are several but it has to be those whereby the element of surprise and whitted humour comes into play. I won’t spoil it by going into detail, but you will know exactly what I’m talking about after you see the show.
The Finale is extravagant, flamboyant and beautiful. A spectacular ending to an incredibly entertaining show and a fun night out. This show is tasteful from start to finish and fantastic fun. For those worried by the age restriction, don’t be – this isn’t smutty but just fun and laughs throughout.
A must see show for those young and old and one you could see more than just once.
