Alphabetti Theatre nominated for Best Fringe Theatre at The Stage Awards

The Stage has announced the shortlist for The Stage Awards 2023, in association with Tysers Insurance Brokers, with Newcastle’s Alphabetti Theatre nominated for Best Fringe Theatre. The annual awards celebrate excellence in British theatre and this year’s shortlist features theatres and organisations across the UK. Winners will be announced on Monday 30th January 2023 at a ceremony at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London.

The Fringe Theatre of the Year category sees Alphabetti Theatre, Newcastle competing against Little Angel Theatre and London and Omnibus Theatre, London for the award, sponsored by Encore Insure. Alphabetti Theatre is an award-winning, artist-led performance space in Newcastle upon Tyne, formed by Ali Pritchard in 2012 to meet the demand for a fringe venue in Newcastle and the North East, ensuring the development of the performing arts in the region.

Alphabetti’s Artistic and Executive Director, Ali Pritchard, comments, We are thrilled to be shortlisted for The Stage Award for Fringe Theatre of the Year alongside the other brilliant theatres Little Angel and Omnibus. It means a lot that what we do is being appreciated, particularly in the current times which are so challenging for lots of people, our goal is and always has been to make great theatre with and for our community and we are honoured to do this with the people of the northeast.

The Stage Awards in association with Tysers Insurance Brokers celebrate the very best achievements in UK theatre during the past 12 months. The awards recognise performing arts organisations and teams who have been making fantastic work and those helping to shape and rebuild the sector for the better.

Alistair Smith, editor of The Stage, commented, The Stage Awards shortlist showcases the extraordinary quality and astonishing variety of work being undertaken across the UK. Our shortlisted organisations come from across the country, including nominees from Belfast, Bolton, Derby, Leicester, Liverpool, Newcastle and Perth. Despite the huge difficulties that theatre has faced over the past two years, these shortlists underline the fact that it is bouncing back and that companies of all types continue to create outstanding work for audiences everywhere. Any of our shortlisted organisations would be worthy winners and we look forward to celebrating with them all on January 30 at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.
