Newcastle’s newest contemporary choir finally reopens
Some Voices, “the UK’s most exciting non-audition pop choir” (BBC Radio), is returning to Newcastle next week after 16 months
After launching in Newcastle in late January 2020, it was only a few short weeks before the new branch of contemporary choir Some Voices had to close its doors for lockdown. The choir community stayed together with online sessions, but now thanks to restrictions easing can finally start singing together in person again.
Leader Lea Cornthwaite, known for his work with Opera North and Sing Up said of the return:
“I’m so excited to get back to live singing in Newcastle. The city has such a fantastic musical and social scene, and that special Some Voices vibe of brilliant music and fun times fits this unique (and friendliest!) part of the country perfectly!” Lea Cornthwaite, Choir Leader
This non-traditional choir’s mission is to be inclusive to all. There are no auditions to join the
main choir, no previous experience is required, and songs are learned by ear so there is no
need to read music:
“Every voice is welcome at Some Voices. Singing together is a great way to make friends in a big city and de-stress at the end of a busy working day.”
Curtis Stansfield, Musical Director
Some Voices has a reputation as a contemporary choir with a difference, described by The Guardian as feeling “less like a choir and more like the closest you might get to being a rock star” and their session on BBC Two’s Friday Night is Music Night was hailed as “mighty and fabulous”. Past performances include recording the soundtrack for BBC One’s 2019 Christmas advert, the 2020 Brit Awards with Mastercard, The Big Feastival, sell-out success Backyard Cinema’s Romeo + Juliet, TimeOut50 and many more.
Rehearsals start on Monday 19th July 2021, 19:00 at Blackfriars @ Ouseburn, with social distancing in place. Free taster sessions are available at www.somevoices.co.uk/newcastle.
