Sufi Master heads to Gateshead!
Sufi Master heads to Gateshead! 5000 miles from home with ‘All Because Of Love’…
Seyed Ali Jaberi and The Hamdel Ensemble: All Because Of Love
Thu 19 September 2019 – Sage Gateshead
Bridging the gap between home in Kermanshah, Iran and life in the UK, as well as Sufi traditions of collective spiritualism in a fast-paced world of individual gain, internationally-renowned tanbour master and composer, Seyed Ali Jaberi tours intimate UK venues with new work, All Because Of Love. Accompanied by The Hamdel Ensemble, formed in Iran in 1997, dates at Sage Gateshead (Thu 19 Sep 2019) and Symphony Hall, Birmingham (Tue 1 Oct 2019) offer UK audiences a timely and stimulating reminder of true Iranian tradition, folklore and spiritualism.
Considered to be amongst the foremost tanbour virtuosi in the Persian-speaking world, Jaberi hails from a family of musicians and Sufi masters, following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps. The instrument itself is widely acknowledged to have originated, and is still intrinsically associated with the western Iranian city and Kurdish minority communities of Jaberi’s upbringing, a life-journey that now continues 3,500 miles away in North West England. His five albums (two recorded and released while living in UK, three while living in Iran) have proved enormously popular with fans of traditional Sufi music in both the UK and in Iran, establishing him unusually rapidly in the notoriously competitive world of indigenous Iranian music.
All Because Of Love, the title of his most recent, 2018 album, is inspired by the philosophy of Rumi, the 13th century Sufi Mystic and internationally-revered poet, whose influence transcends national borders and ethnic divisions. Jaberi’s ten-part studio recording now leads to the specially-developed stage performance, set within a devotional, authentically Sufi setting of Rumi’s poetry. Interspersed with dervish dance, the show is dominated by the masterful, sweeping performances of traditional and contemporary song by Jaberi and the ensemble of an additional eight musicians and singers.
