‘If I could turn back time’, I’d go back and see this all over again! This show made me ‘believe’ in loving this show! Ok.. enough of the puns because this show doesn’t need them. Admittedly I’m not the biggest fan of Cher, but can appreciate a song and life story, but have to admit this production was one of the best all round shows I’ve seen.
So a show about Cher, what on earth could they do to base a musical biography of her life and fit in an array of classic songs. Well, firstly they cast three fantastic ladies together, namely Debbie Kurup, Danielle Steers and Millie O’Connell. Then featured the actresses portraying Cher in three different ways throughout her iconic career, with Debbie as ‘Star’, Danielle as ‘Lady’ and Millie as ‘Babe’.
Next a story or rather timeline seamlessly integrated. We got to see and meet the influential people in her life, from her mother and Sonny Bono, to fashion designer and costumier Bob Mackie. We see the highs and lows of the men who underestimated her, how she grew from a shy sixteen year old to an independent woman oozing confidence, to her career as a singer, film star and back again!
Onwards we go. The staging and lighting was phenomenal. This was some of the most impressive scene setting and mood making staging I’ve seen in a while. While the core of the set was a static row of rails and clothing on either side, what they produced in between was great. Lighting, choreography and use of props really brought this show to life. I also really enjoyed the transitioning of years which felt very natural and flowed.
Lastly, again another mention for the three Chers who all brought their own individuality and at the same time those Cher-isms we know to their roles, that made each perfect for their respective time period. I loved the way they interchanged, the way they were all made part of the same scene and each contributed throughout the whole show. I’m going to sit on the fence and let you decide who your favourite will be without any hints. Each will be loved by different people for different reasons.
Of course Lucas Rush as Sonny has to get a mention too, and was enjoyable as the man that Cher couldn’t forget and the one that helped to catapult this young singer into the limelight.
The musical is packed with 35 of her biggest hits, including ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’, ‘I Got You Babe’, ‘Strong Enough’, ‘The Shoop Shoop Song’ and ‘Believe’.
The audience gave one of the loudest cheers to a show that I’ve heard since being back at the theatre accompanied by a standing ovation and it was well deserved.
