THE WALL: The UK’s most iconic ultramarathon through historic Hadrian’s Wall country
1,500 runners to conquer 70 stunning miles from Carlisle Castle to Gateshead Baltic Quay
1,500 runners will take on the UK’s most iconic ultramarathon on Saturday the 15th of June, conquering 70 stunning miles with +3460 ft of elevation through historic Hadrian’s Wall country, originally built to guard the wild north-west frontier of the Roman Empire.
Starting from Carlisle Castle to Gateshead Baltic Quay, The Wall is one of leading adventure trip and event company Rat Race’s longest-serving events that they’ve operated since 2012. This year’s event is their biggest one yet, selling out to 1,500 first time ultrarunners and seasoned pros alike, drawing in locals and people from across the world from Denmark, Belgium, Germany, US and Canada, who are passionate about taking on a challenge in support of a range of worthy causes, including Rat Race’s charity partner, Children with Cancer UK.
Participants can run or trek the classic route which has been designed to be achieved in 26 hours at a minimum 3mph walking pace, making The Wall an accessible first step into ultramarathon territory for those new to the world beyond 26.2 miles.
The route is shrouded in myth and legend, enveloped in glorious English countryside, moor, river and valley, passing through local tourist attractions including the Lanercost Priory and The Sill, culminating in a dramatic finale amongst the bridges of the Newcastle Gateshead quayside. Participants can discover the remains of the forts, towers, turrets and towns that once kept watch over Hadrian’s Wall, witnessing rare Roman artefacts and taking in spectacular views of the rugged landscape.
The Wall adventure leader Rob, who is Rat Race’s highly experienced Project Manager, said: “The Wall is one of our longest-serving adventure formats for a reason. It comprises a continuous and fully supported journey with incredible views along the way, defying the stereotype that ultramarathons can only be completed by elite athletes.
We pride ourselves on expert way-marking and legendary Pit Stops to keep runners fuelled up from Carlisle to Newcastle with the most unbelievable spreads you have ever seen in an ultrarun. If you don’t come for the breathtaking scenery, come for the snacks!”
Jim Mee, the founder of Rat Race, added: “The Wall represents our ethos at Rat Race around creating extraordinary adventures for everyday folks. The event is the perfect first ultramarathon format for those who have ever considered completing one, as you are able to complete the event at just 3mph, meaning runners or trekkers of all levels can take part.”
