The Customs House lies on the South bank of the River Tyne in the historic Mill Dam in the town of South Shields.  

The Customs House offers arts and entertainment for all, serving the residents of South Tyneside and beyond with a varied programme of live performance, cinema, visual arts and projects for children and young people.

Dame Bella’s Bar and Bistro serves food and drink .

Situated on the south bank of the River Tyne adjacent to the ferry landing, it has impressive views both across and up and down the river. The building is comprised of a 437 seat theatre, 145 seated studio/cinema, gallery spaces, restaurant, private dining room and an events suite.

The South Shields Metro Station is only a short walk away. The Shields Ferry terminal is 300 yards walk and we will refund a single ferry fare on the day of the performance for each event ticket purchased.

A free car park, situated at the rear of the building is for the sole use of The Customs House patrons attending performances and events.

The Customs House was formerly a customs post, built in the 1860’s for commercial shipping, just before South Shields was declared an independent port and at a time when the River Tyne was a thriving centre of trade and activity.

After the decline of the shipping industry, the building fell into disrepair and was derelict during the 1960’s and 1970’s. In the 1990’s, Tyne and Wear Development Corporation funded capital development of The Customs House, turning it into an Arts and Entertainment Centre for the people of South Tyneside and beyond. This was done by refurbishing the original building and adding a new purpose built theatre. The Grade II listed building opened its doors in November 1994, providing South Shields with its first theatre and cinema in twelve years.
