A SUMMER programme of activity across Sunderland city centre will get off to a mouthwatering start, with the chance to watch top tv chef, Si King, recreate some healthy favourites.
On Monday 25 July Minster Park will host a Family Fun and Food Day, organised by Sunderland BID and with support from Sunderland City Council.
And along with face painters and other entertainment, visitors can enjoy the opportunity to watch a range of chefs cook up a number of easy-to-do healthy meals.
Hairy Biker, Si King, will be hosting three sessions on the day, at noon, 1pm and 2pm where he’ll be demonstrating a recipe from his latest cookbook, The Hairy Dieters’ Simple Healthy Food:80 Tasty Recipes to Lose Weight and Stay Healthy.
The aim of the event is to highlight that healthy food can be tasty and simple, with the hope of encouraging families to try them out at home.
“Just because something is healthy doesn’t mean that it isn’t delicious,” said Si.
“I hope that the demonstrations will showcase that and will also inspire everyone to go home and try out the recipe for themselves.”
The event will also showcase a number of homegrown food heroes, starting off the day at 11am with a demonstration by Nedhi Chera of The Funky Indian Wali who will be showing how to make some healthy Indian dishes.
At 3pm, fitness guru Joe Sexton, who runs Fat Loss Feast, will also be creating some meals that can easily be created at home.
The demonstrations are being supported by Ocado, the online supermarket which will be providing the ingredients.
There will also be an opportunity for anyone attending to win a copy of The Hairy Dieters’ cookbook.
Sharon Appleby, Chief Executive of Sunderland BID, believes the event will inspire people to try out the recipes at home.
“When everyone has busy lives it is too easy just to buy convenience food but hopefully all of these demonstrations will inspire everyone to enjoy cooking at home,” she said.
“The aim is to show that it can be quick and easy to create delicious, healthy food from scratch.”
The Family Fun and Food Day marks the start of a packed summer programme across Sunderland city centre, which includes a roller skating rink at Keel Square, a Jurassic Jungle AR trial via the Sunderland Experience app, appearances by a range of colourful characters, kids clubs’ and workshops.
Councillor Linda Williams, Portfolio Holder for Vibrant City at Sunderland City Council said: “There are some fantastic events happening in Sunderland this summer and the Family Fun and Food Day promises to be another highlight.
“I hope to see lots of people taking full advantage of this free event where they can learn to make some healthy dishes, support Sunderland’s homegrown food businesses and enjoy a great day out for all the family.”
