Metrocentre Roller Rink returns with £5 sessions

Metrocentre’s popular Roller Rink courtesy of Power Through Sport has returned to Exhibition Square, offering affordable skating sessions for all ages throughout the final fortnight of the summer holidays.

Running until Bank Holiday Monday 31 August, the rink combines skating lessons and freestyle sessions for retro roller-disco nostalgia, accompanied with music spanning more than five decades. Visitors can skate to everything from 1970s grooves and 1980s power ballads to 1990s classics, noughties anthems and today’s chart hits.

The daily programme includes:

  • SEND-friendly inclusive sessions at 10.30am
  • 1970s skating from 11am
  • 1980s power ballads from midday
  • 1990s classics from 1pm
  • Noughties anthems from 2pm
  • Pop and chart favourites from the 2010s at 3pm
  • Hits from the 2020s at 4pm
  • Request sessions from 5pm, excluding Sundays

Dedicated Learn to Skate sessions also take place at 9.30am and 10am every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, giving complete beginners the chance to develop their confidence with support from experienced instructors.

Every 30-minute session costs £5, including skate hire if required. The accessible price and varied programme make the rink suitable for everyone from children stepping onto skates for the first time to parents and grandparents reliving their roller-disco years.

Every ticket sold helps support the work of Power Through Sport CIC, a North East social enterprise which uses inclusive physical activity to improve health and wellbeing, build confidence and strengthen social connections.

Through its work in communities and schools, Power Through Sport creates opportunities for children, young people and adults to get active, including those who may face financial, social or practical barriers to participation.

Johnny Tulip, Managing Director of Power Through Sport CIC, said: “One of the best things about the Roller Rink at Metrocentre is seeing different generations enjoying it together. We welcome children trying skating for the first time, experienced skaters, parents and grandparents who haven’t put on a pair of skates for years.

“At £5 including skate hire, we’ve worked hard to keep the price affordable and accessible. Every ticket also helps us continue creating inclusive opportunities for people to get active, improve their wellbeing and build confidence through sport.”

Booking is recommended, although walk-in places may be available subject to capacity. Sessions can be booked at Power Through Sport.
