OPERA NORTH INVITES NEW AUDIENCES TO DISCOVER OPERA AT NEWCASTLE THEATRE ROYAL

Opera North returns to Newcastle Theatre Royal this autumn with two acclaimed productions, offering audiences the perfect opportunity to experience the power of live opera for the first time. Verdi’s Rigoletto plays from Wed 4 – Fri 6 Nov 2026, followed by Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin on Sat 7 Nov 2026.

Combining breathtaking live music, powerful storytelling and stunning theatrical spectacle, both productions showcase why opera continues to captivate audiences around the world. With English subtitles displayed throughout every performance, opera has never been more accessible for those looking to try something new.

Opening the visit is Rigoletto, Verdi’s gripping tale of love, loyalty, and revenge. Directed by Femi Elufowoju Jr, the award-winning production shines a light on the special bond between father and daughter, as court jester Rigoletto finds his world turned upside down when the people he fears most threaten the person he loves the most. Exploring themes of identity, belonging, and family, this fresh interpretation brings a contemporary perspective to one of opera’s greatest dramas.

Later in the week, audiences can experience Eugene Onegin, Tchaikovsky’s heartbreaking coming-of-age story inspired by Alexander Pushkin’s celebrated novel. Reimagined in 1980’s Russia by director Patrick Nolan, the opera follows young Tatyana as she falls for the charismatic Onegin, only to face rejection and heartbreak. Set against a backdrop of political and social change, the story unfolds through some of Tchaikovsky’s most beautiful and emotionally charged music.

Whether audiences are seasoned opera fans or completely new to the art form, Opera North’s visit offers a chance to experience two timeless stories brought vividly to life by world-class performers and the internationally renowned Orchestra of Opera North.

For younger audiences looking to discover opera for the first time, Newcastle Theatre Royal’s 18-30 Membership offers discounted tickets from just £10, plus exclusive benefits. The scheme enables members to explore everything from opera and ballet to drama and musicals, while joining a community of like-minded theatre goers.

Emily Simpson, Director of Audiences & Brand at Opera North, said: “We are always looking for new ways to enable everyone to experience the thrill of live opera and remove any barriers which might prevent someone from joining us. The fact we welcomed over 7,000 first-timers last season shows that the appetite for opera is very much alive, with people of all ages keen to discover it for themselves.”
