Junkyard Golf Newcastle – 30/5/23

The fabulous Junkyard Golf has hit up Newcastle for a while now but yet you may not have been in! You can find it on Newgate Street just a stone’s throw away from The Gate. A super central location and only a few minutes away from the train station. This would be a great go to for a cute date, a birthday celebration or a hen and stag party. There were actually all three of these happening as we were heading round the course at 4pm on a Tuesday afternoon. Definitely a busy spot with ultimate vibes.

I have visited the Liverpool venue and was delighted our course here in Newcastle was, dare I say it, even better! Much more open plan! When we arrived at 4pm, we were shocked at just how busy it was! There was already a huge queue ahead of us which the girls behind the check in desk whittled down very quickly! I think when a venue is busy it really does speak volumes especially on a Tuesday afternoon!

There are three courses – Pablo, the realm of tropical terror, Gary and his discotastic UV room and Bozo, filled with circus freaks and fairground creeps. We got to have a little sneak peak around all of the courses but we ended up on Gary- the UV room really does make this such a fun course! Each round costs £8.50 per person per green Off Peak and £10.00 during Peak hours. Super reasonable for the 9 hole course! Students also get half price tickets Sunday – Thursday with a valid Student ID!

Inside the venue you can expect to find fun and wild decorations, I mean there’s two gigantic bears on the Pablo course, I don’t think many other venues have this! Disco balls were everywhere- and for a lover of disco balls I was incredibly excited! It’s just so cool! Also, be aware if you have a phobia of clowns do NOT head onto the Bozo course! Very creepy!

We started off by sampling some of the cocktails and if you know me I’m a sucker for a frozen cocktail! They had both Strawberry Daiquiris and Appletinis available in slush form. Apple is such an underrated flavour in the cocktail world so obviously I went for that. Filled with Apple Liqueur, Apple Sourz and Lime Juice  it was a taste sensation however, be careful when drinking as if you spill it it gets everywhere and stains you bright green… I can hold my hands up and say I have learned from my mistakes! The cocktails are honestly so fun and some with a mixture of sweets and toppings. We also got a non alcoholic Sweet Sunrise, a little too sickly for me, but I did appreciate the temporary tattoo and popping candy that came with it! There is a £6 Happy Hour Sunday through to Wednesday and this is an absolute bargain for the cocktail you get!

Junkyard Golf also has snacks available of Pizza and Nachos at a very reasonable price. I wonder whether they’d ever think about extending their menu as I think this could do really well, especially with how busy it was. I have to say the staff went above and beyond and were incredibly friendly, particularly the Bar Manager who was giving us the lowdown on the best cocktails and how my Appletini had turned his hands illuminous green… sorry!

It’s a pretty straightforward process when you get there! First up, is check in. You get your wristbands from check in and they also have a cloakroom which is incredibly handy especially if you’ve had a big day shopping in Newcastle! Next, they gave us time to get a drink and then we headed into the course where we collected our clubs and balls. Like a normal mini golf course, we queued up and awaited our turn. The people on the course before and after us were super lovely and we even ended up befriending a Scottish couple who were visiting for the day.

Now, I am no Mini Golf expert but some of these holes were pretty difficult and I may have gone off course several times. Think Happy Gilmore style, I do not know my own strength! We belly laughed the whole way round and our particular favourite part of the Gary course had to be the UV room. It was super cool and there were three holes in here with some awesome music in tow! Finally, to end Gary on the final hole we had to partake in the slide. Yes, a slide on a Mini Golf course! So much fun!

After we had exhausted ourselves from being terrible at Mini Golf we headed off for one more cocktail each. I went for the Disco 54 – Malibu, Passoa, Citrus, Sugar and Pineapple Juice- all served up in a Disco Ball glass … if you could write my dream cocktail, this would be it! The Barman’s top recommendation was Pablo’s Love which contained Plantation Pineapple Rum, Langs Banana Rum, Lime Sherbert, Orgeat, Pineapple and Anise Bitters and wow, this didn’t half pack a punch! It was like Summer in a glass!

If you’re ever at a loose end, looking for a fun activity whatever the occasion and find yourself with a spare 40 minutes, I cannot recommend Junkyard Golf Newcastle more highly. Show stopping decor, helpful and friendly staff and an all round hilarious time. My cheeks still hurt from laughing now. Thanks for bringing your Golf to Newcastle Junkyard!
