Preview: Fiddler on the Roof 12th – 15th March

Tyne Theatre and Opera House

WEOS Musical Productions presents the well-loved musicalFiddler on the Roof at The Tyne Theatre and Opera House this month. The story tells the tale of Tevye, a lovely milk man and his family as they trudge through life in Anatevka, a then fictional town in what is now The Ukraine. (Anatevka was fictional at the time but there is now a real Anatevka in the Ukraine which provides housing and shelter for people displaced by the invasions by Russia in 2014 and 2022.)

Tevyve is a traditional man and holds very firm beliefs which are challenged throughout this story by his very head strong daughters. He is a fair man and tries very hard to understand the ever-changing world around him. This is not always as easy as it seems.

With a book by Joseph Stein and music and lyrics by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick respectively, there is poignancy with the modern world given all that is going on in that particular region at the present time.

The story is very much about family and tradition, and WEOS reflect that in their 54 member strong cast where no fewer than 20 of them are related in one way or another. In fact, mirroring the story that they are bringing to the stage, Liam Gilbert who is playing Motel, the tailor will be marrying Bekki Shenfine, who plays Tevye’s eldest daughter, Tzeitel in July. We all wish Liam and Bekki a happy wedding day and future life together as husband and wife.

The music in Fiddler on the Roof is sublime including Sunrise, Sunset, The Sabbath Prayer and Far From the Home I Love and it is not to be missed.

Fiddler on the Roof is being performed at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House, Newcastle upon Tyne between 12th and 15th April. Matinees on Thursday (a relaxed performance with Makaton signing) and Saturday.
