We all love a good Burger. Whether it’s a classic quarter pounder with cheese, or a slow cooked pulled pork with slaw. Whether it’s Wagyu beef on a brioche, or a spicy bean burger in a bao bun.

British meat-eaters collectively eat 2.5 billion beef burgers, that’s an eye watering 80 burgers eaten every second! And while we don’t come close to our American counterparts in the numbers that works out at the average Brit eating roughly 37 burgers annually.

Their popularity has made them known worldwide, and the subject of many a film and TV reference. Whether it’s the Big Kahuna Burger, or Le Big Mac. Krusty Burger, or Bob’s Burgers. You don’t need to go far to feel the pull of the burger.

The humble burger has come far from its origins, spawning many hybrids, spin offs and creative fusions. But whether you are a burger purist with their plain patties, or a lover of the Krispy Kreme Triple Cheeseburger (yes! that’s a thing), there is a day for you. National Burger Day. Held annually in August on the Thursday before the Bank Holiday weekend. This year, it takes place on August 24th.

If you are looking to celebrate National Burger Day in style we’ve made our top ten list to help you decide where to go. We’ve tried and tested, munched and macerated. It was a tough job but someone had to!

So, where are the best burgers in Toon?

Good question.

It’s a topic of hot debate, with so many places to choose from. You’ve got all the big chain players, small independents, food trucks and restaurants, all contending for the title of ‘Best Burgers in Newcastle’.

We’ve complied our personal ‘Top Ten Burgers in Newcastle’ for your deliberation. So sit back, have a good read and let then us know what you think in via Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

So, in no particular order, here is our definitive top ten…

Fat Hippo

With venues in Jesmond, Newcastle and Durham the Fat Hippo is one of the north easts favourite Burger Joints. We simply had to include them in our Top Ten!

Born in 2010 with roots in Newcastle Upon Tyne, they’re renowned for the best burgers and dirty fries. Recognised for their quality ingredients and quirky flavours, this is ‘good old fashioned, roll up your sleeves and get it all over your face’ food.

All their burgers are served in toasted demi brioche and include a free side. These big burgers really pack a flavour punch and hit the spot! Their PB + JJ probably sums this up perfectly, with geneous lashings of chunky peanut butter, bacon jam and smoked chilli jello!

Lola Jeans

Based in Tynemouth and Newcastle, Lola Jeans is a sophisticated and stylish popular restaurant and bar, and popular choice for burger lovers in the north east.

Tynemouth boasts the first Lola Jeans venue within view of stunning coastlines, the priory, located at The Arcade amidst the vibrant Front Street.

Newcastle city centre is their second home, with their signature style of Lola Jeans, with beautiful large chandeliers and painted murals by incredible local artists.

Lola Jeans are regulars at the ‘Battle of the Burger’ held at Wylam Brewery in Newcastle. Winning no less than 6 times! You can try their winning burgers and they are definitely worth a try! Their last winner in 2022 ‘Tickle The Pickle‘ features a unique mix with smokey streaky bacon, red onion jam, ranch dressing and pickled onion Monster Munch!!!

They use the finest same cut of the beef knuckle, and make and mince all their burgers in house. Their chefs spend weeks planning, designing, taste testing and perfecting new creations before the burgers are released, ensuring they’re crafting only the best of the best.

Meat:Stack

Starting on the Newcastle Quayside Sunday Market in 2016 Meat:Stack had with one thing in mind! Bringing the cheeseburger back to its American roots of quality, flavour and simplicity to deliver the best burger out there.  

They sourced the best beef available from rare and traditional breed cows and mix a bespoke selection of cuts into their patties.   They smash them onto a raging hot grill, cover in cheese, stack them in double or triples, then steam to melt everything together.   Their sauces and seasonings are freshly made, in house, and are designed to compliment the beefy flavours they create.  

Their menu contains all the best American classics from across the US, in double and triple burger options. A firm favourite in Newcastle this burger joint proves a very popular venue.

Brack Burger

Brack Burger have made a name for themselves by serving Newcastle with some of the best of burgers, fries, sides & more!

With a host of venues to grab your burger from you are spoilt for choice. You can get them from SOHO Jesmond Osbornes, The Jubilee Gosforth, Ouseburn Garden, Tynemouth Surf Cafe or via Uber Eats.

SOHO Jesmond (formally known as Osbornes) is situated in the heart of Jesmond, Osborne Road.  A large premises with multiple big screens makes it the perfect place for live sports.

The Jubilee Gosforth is a family ran public house situated in Gosforth just off the main High Street. 8 big screens makes it the perfect place for sports with live weekly music & entertainment as well as pool tables & darts boards. Expect a large selection of larger, cider, craft beer, spirits & wines. Children & dog friendly. Full wheelchair access, high chairs and baby changing facilities available.

Brack Burger Ouseburn is located at the Ouseburn Garden. The picturesque outdoor garden is complete with shipping container bar and an American inspired diner, its the perfect place to kick back with a cocktail, beer or burger. The huge LED screens makes it the perfect place for live sports with fire pits & outdoor heating available.  Lots of weekly events and one off special events, there’s something new happening every week.

The Surf Cafe is a small but mighty Cafe and Music venue situated on Grand Parade Tynemouth overlooking Longsands beach. The bar includes 5 taps of the best beers we can lay our hands on. Expect local heroes such as Flash house Brewery and Two By Two Brewing as well as breweries from further afield such as Camden Town & Beavertown. Children & dog friendly. Full wheelchair access, high chairs and baby changing facilities available.

Brack Burger do some amazing burgers. You might even recognise a few of their popular takes on the big chains most famous burgers! Ronald’s Rancour is definitely worth a try just for that!

Their boneless buttermilk fried chicken burgers also hit the spot. The Mother Clucker and The Stunt Man v2 (a salt and pepper chicken burger) proving a firm favourite for us.

There is also some fab veggie and vegan options available, with Ronald’s Rehabilitation is a must try for the herbivores amongst us.

Upgrades are available for all burgers, with some great combos for the brave of heart.

And if you still have room after all that we’d definitely recommend their Churros!

The Gourmet Burger Van

Bringing Gourmet Burgers to the north east from his old-school converted horse trailer Elliot can be found at food festivals, sports events and weddings across the North East, or popping up at your favourite brewery and pub.

He started his venture after years of frustration looking for a decent burger. His handcrafted gourmet burgers are made with love and from locally sourced fresh produce. He’s one of a couple of small independent food vans we’ve included in our top ten as you can really taste the passion and thought that has gone into his burgers.

FED’s Chicken

Based in the historic Grainger Market this delight brings a great Chicken Burger to the heart of Newcastle city centre. We just had to include them for this!

As chicken burgers go it hits the spot! Crispy, yet succulent. Great taste, award winning, grain fed, crispy fried chicken served up a smile. They care passionately about quality and only use chicken from Soanes family poultry farm in the Yorkshire Wolds. They sweet tea brine all their chicken, making it extra succulent and flavourful and perfectly seasoned throughout. All of their sauces are designed and made in house.

They have a great range of classic sides available to compliment their creations. Their wings, cauli bombs and buffalo fries are all incredibly moreish. We’d definitely recommend trying these too!

Flying Pigz BBQ

Set up by food lovers Pablo and Kieren after quitting the rat race to pursue their passion for the perfect smokehouse BBQ food. They bought their food van ‘Huxley‘ and never looked back! This BBQ on wheels brings the best burgers to you, and you can also pop in store in Wallsend to grab yourself a bite (cash only).

Kafeneon

Bringing the delights of Greek food to the north east since 1998 this firm favourite with Geordies has had a revamp last year, and it has proved a huge success with diners. You can sit outside on the Bigg Market and soak in some sun while you tuck into their tasty lunchtime Lamb and Halloumi Burger. Although it isn’t a burger joint per say we had to include it after trying this bad boy!

Served with thick, hand cut chips, salad and Tzaziki sauce this fresh juicy burger is deliciously seasoned. The Halloumi really hits the spot and goes perfect with the Lamb. But don’t just take our word for it, get along and try it for yourself!

Pigalo’s

North Shield’s Pigalo’s are well known for their steak burgers and mouth-watering stacks that are as messy as they are tasty.

The portions are very generous and they proudly call themselves ‘The Kings of Gluttony’. And it is easy to see why!

Fantastic friendly service makes this joint one of Newcastle’s best. You’ll be back for more before you know it. You can find them on Facebook here.

Burger Drop

With restaurants in both Heaton and Westgate Road these newcomers are proving very popular, bringing customers from far and wide.

Set up during the pandemic by three brothers from Newcastle, they aim to bring you the ultimate burger experience. Burgers with real thought, months of work and passion, to craft an amazing experience for you and your lucky palate. The kind of burger you’d travel miles to get!

Their menu boasts an array of burgers, with plenty of choice. All of the classics, plus some contemporary twists, the option to triple or quad up, Crispy Chicken burgers, Veggie and Vegan Options.

Wings from around the world, loaded fries and more!

And what better to wash the ultimate burger down with than a Deluxe Milkshake? Their Billionaire Drop Deluxe Milkshake is sure to hit the spot.
