The upcoming production of EVERYMAN at the People’s Theatre has proven so popular that they’ve added an extra performance due to demand!
Carol Ann Duffy’s EVERYMAN boldly reimagines a fifteenth century morality play into an assault on the modern consumer age, and a reminder of our own mortality.
The eponymous protagonist Everyman is a bad-boy banker who swaggers his way through a sex and drug fuelled life of self-gratification. But when Ev is called to a reckoning by God for the sins of mankind, he is forced to take stock of his selfish life.
Asking questions about responsibility, conscience, the fast-pace of our modern lifestyle, the role of family and environmental concerns, the former Poet Laureate’s reworking is both poignant and bitingly funny in its spiritual and ecological message.
Directors Tony Childs and Chris Heckels-Thompson comment: “This is very much a play for our times, and what the world has become. We’ve both directed a lot of plays at the People’s and this is the most exciting play to work on that either of us can remember, and it’s not like any other. We’re thrilled to be able to add this extra performance so even more people can join us!”
Also in February: the Spring/Summer Season kicks off with TUESDAY by award-winning North-East writer Alison Carr. An ordinary Tuesday turns really, really weird when the sky over Lane End School suddenly rips open, unleashing a parallel universe! Confusion reigns and soon tensions are rising. Can the students restore the universes before it’s too late?
Join the talented Young People’s Theatre for this exploration of identity, friendship, loss, responsibility, and astronomical theories of the multiverse!
