GET SANTA TO THE RUNHEAD…

STAFF at a leading Tyne Valley pub are putting their best feet forward to walk five million steps – the same distance Santa Claus covers from his North Pole home to Ryton every Christmas.

From 12 October, the team at The Runhead, Ryton, are hoping to cover the 2,420mile distance Santa covers and raise money for charity.

And they are calling on pubgoers and the general public to help them complete the challenge in time for the Big Christmas Light Switch-On at The Runhead at 5pm on 26 November.

Every step will count, with the team’s progress tracked through an app. A large progress tracker will also be displayed in the pub, so customers can follow Santa’s journey and see how close he is to reaching The Runhead.

And – with any luck – they will be able to watch Santa cross the finish line at the pub in time for its Christmas lights switch on and an evening festive fun for all the family.

There will be live music from the Ryton Singers, free mulled wine and hot chocolate, face painting for younger children and a variety of stalls selling locally made items.

And children are also invited to bring along their letters to Santa and hand them to him in person.

The venue, owned by leading Newcastle-based leisure operator Malhotra Group plc, has set up a JustGiving page so anyone can donate and every penny raised will be donated to the Group’s nominated charity; Children’s Cancer North.

“Although our staff are front and centre of this challenge to cover the same distance that Santa does when he travels from the North Pole to Ryton, I’m sure we would welcome a little help,” said Runhead business manager Mark Johnson.

“If anyone would like to join our team then do get in touch and, obviously, if you would like to help us help children in our region affected by cancer, then do please dig deep and support us.

“The pub will be packed when he crosses the finish line and we switch on the Christmas lights and I’m sure that thought will keep us going as we complete the challenge.”
