HEADING TO THE RACES THIS SUMMER? READ THESE TOP TIPS FOR SURVIVING HEELS ALL DAY LONG

WITH the summer racing event calendar in full swing, race goers are picking out their perfect outfits and getting ready for the big race days. However, it can be difficult to select the perfect footwear to ensure comfort all day long. But should it be about sacrificing comfort for style? Here Deborah Scott at Newcastle Racecourse – who this year will mark her 14th Plate Festival and Ladies Day – shares her top tips for getting race day ready.

Deborah says: “Our summer racing programme is a highlight in the social calendar, and we know our guests want to look their best. But it’s important to remember that compared to other spectator sports, you could be on your feet for up to 8 hours, especially if you’re enjoying the post-racing entertainment too. At our annual Northumberland Plate Festival for example, you could be enjoying the likes of ABBA Revival and Scam Fender until late after a full day of racing – that’s over 10 times longer than if you were to attend a football match! So, it’s no surprise that so many ladies have their shoes off by the end of the night.

“However, it’s not about putting the heels away for good, there are great options out there that you could choose. For example, instead of a stiletto heel, why not opt for a block heel or wedge. This will provide you with extra comfort and will also stop you from sinking into the grass. Alternatively, you can purchase heel protectors in advance for your stilettos which won’t compromise your overall look but will keep your heels clean and you secure standing on the lawn. You can purchase these from Amazon for as little as £6.00.

“If you’ve bought yourself a beautiful new pair of shoes for the occasion, make sure you have broken them in before the big day. Alternatively, try wearing heels more in the run up to race day, so your feet have had time to adjust. Depending on the style of heel, a gel in-sole could make a real difference with added cushioning for extra foot support.

“But we know even the most confident of heel wearers get it wrong, which is why exclusively for Ladies Day we will be offering flip flops which will be available on the day at the Racecourse. So, no longer do you need to be walking around barefoot, but you can enjoy the day of entertainment in comfort and style.”

Tickets are available now for Newcastle Racecourse’s summer events. Taking place from Thursday 26th – Saturday 28th June is the JenningsBet Northumberland Plate Festival, which is one of the most prestigious events in the racing calendar, featuring the iconic Northumberland Plate Handicap, and attracting top-class horses and a vibrant crowd.

Ladies Day will once again bring the glamour on Saturday 26th July, with a combination of fashion, fillies, fizz, and live music. The highly anticipated Style Awards will no doubt be a huge highlight, with the top 10 best-dressed racegoers crowned on the day, with multiple prizes up for grabs.

Tickets can be purchased online, via telephone, or at the Newcastle Racecourse office.
