MALDRON HOTEL NEWCASTLE Review

A week ago we at InNewcastle.co.uk had been given the opportunity to have 3 course dinner, a 1 night stay in a double room and breakfast at the new Maldron Hotel Newcastle which opened in December 2018 and only recently had its official launch.

The Maldron Hotel Newcastle dominates the site of which the Newgate Shopping Centre previously held residence. I think we can agree that with the progression of Eldon Square this site definitely needing refreshing and with this hotel we certainly got an upgrade and another hotel located in the heart of the town.

The Maldron Hotel Newcastle is part of the the Dalata Hotel Group who bring a wide selection of venues across Ireland. This is the first foray into the UK Market so were they to be a shining star among the current accommodation options in Newcastle?

CHECK IN:

So our stay was for a Tuesday check in. Due to prior appointments in the town we were to be in early so i called ahead to see if they provided a bag drop service until we checked in – which they did and were more than happy to help us with later that morning. Check in is at 3pm which for some is late however check out isn’t until 12pm.

Charlie checked me in at the reception desk and was very helpful and friendly, and even shared a couple of jokes helping me feel relaxed upon check in and the friendly nature this hotel was to show me. She informed me of my room and directions and let me be.

THE ROOM

The fifth floor was my location for our stay, and so made my way up via the lift and corridors. I liked the fact the lift does not move unless you swipe your room card, meaning you have to be staying to access room areas.

We had a double room for the night and was very happy upon entry.

Smart, Sleek and Stylish. The hotel have ensured that you feel relaxed and comfortable while giving a finish that is more than its nearest competitor may offer. Obviously the first thing you do, as i did was lay (jump) on the bed and as i did so, sank into the lush mattress which i really didn’t want to get off.

Plenty of plugs around the room and also USB points too so you can plug your phone in and have your laptop or other electricals going at the same time

The Bathroom facilities again smart and stylish. Hugely happy with the rainforest shower head (that i dream of getting eventually but get to enjoy for one night here.) within a really good sized shower, accompanied by sink and toilet.

Towels hung ready and another set just outside on the shelf for your second person.

Space in the room was ample given that we also had space for a table and 2 chairs in the corner, cupboard space, and iron and board. A nice touch that was missing was a bag stand to pop your suitcase on (but i might just be picky here as there is nothing else to be negative about)

The one part of staying in a city centre hotel surrounded by a shopping complex is that the views will be limited dependent on your room. I overlooked an inner courtyard which appeared to have a plant room/generator -not the most flattering however my time wasn’t to be spent looking out of my window but rather enjoy the facilities in the hotel elsewhere.

DINNER

I had booked my reservation and the Grain and Grill which is the resident restaurant of the hotel which is open to the public also for tea/coffee, alcohol, afternoon tea or dinner. A nice touch was that on either wall to our side was a tv screen imitating a fireplace. Whilst not real made me feel warm just looking at it.

Ashley attended to us for our evening meal, seating us and ensuring we had water whilst taking our drink order. Professional, Friendly, Smiley and polite she ensured we were ok and had everything we needed from taking our starter and main order, also mentioning that i picked her favourite main meal in the Green Thai Curry – which made me feel better about ordering it too.

We had as Starters a Smoked salmon potato cake and Arancini Main Meal – Hanging Kebab of Chicken, chorizo, pepper, smokey BBQ dip and a Green Thai Curry and Dessert of Sticky Toffee Pudding and Wild Berry Cheesecake.

The food was delicious and as i write this have decided to write a separate review on the meal alone as it was enjoyed more and deserves its own write up

Service was great and rather than look after selected diners or zones both Ashley and and Samantha worked together well ensuring all the diners were being seen too, acknowledged and enjoying themselves. Sometimes meaning both checked on your table to see if you were ok and needed anything. Relaxed, not rushed and quiet. Just what i had wanted.

THE OVERNIGHT STAY

Tucked in for the evening we sat up on our bed with the tv opposite us, a good selection of channels mean we had a decent choice of options to watch until it was time to clock out for the night. The bedside lamps great as they were rotatable so we could control the amount of light too as one read and the other slept. A great night sleep was had and certainly felt refreshed in the morning. Not wanting to get out of bed meant that we went to breakfast late.

BREAKFAST

Welcomed by the manager, we were asked if we had attended breakfast before. Having not he then explained to us where all the stations were, where we could get our drinks and also told us that we could have a choice of eggs and omlettes made fresh to our specification if so desired.

As with most hotels this was a buffet style and so we picked our way through creating our breakfast of which we went for fry ups. However to note there were also cereal options and a gluten free section. The sausages were a stand out to me as i they were unexpectedly flavoursome and tasty.

With the check out being at 12pm we were relaxed in getting ready for the check out, not needing to rush and so got ready and departed. (sadly)

A great stay at this hotel had been experienced. Dinner was as good as some restaurants i have been to, breakfast got me ready for the day ahead and a great night’s sleep is all you want when your not in your own bed. (Although i think i wanted to steal their mattress for my bed at home).

SUMMARY

The Maldron hotel Newcastle is an A 4 star hotel, As central as you can get with all the amenities in and around it. This is an obvious choice for your stay in Newcastle if you are here Sightseeing, Visiting for the weekend, or here for Business.

Every time i had been in the bar or eating area i also witnessed a manager being present and ensuring everyone was having a good time from them getting into conversations, exchanging stories or a simple hello as you walked past each other.

When it comes to the weekend i would be interested in staying here as i am led to believe its a different kind of stay with hen and stag parties joining the guest list. However don’t let that put you off as from the reviews i have read on trip advisor the hotel will keep you away from the possibly louder guests and on site security will ensure everyone has a pleasant stay leaving those reviewers to still score highly.

Our affiliate partner NEOFFERS also offer a stay for the same package we received so why not giver the hotel a try for yourself from ONLY £99 for a 3 course dinner, Overnight Stay for 2, Breakfast, Late Check out and a Glass of prosecco. Stay must be before Dec 2019. CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT MORE
