Music fans at Eldon Square were treated to a special appearance from Newcastle-born band Knats today, as the Mercury Prize-nominated group stopped by HMV to meet fans and sign copies of their latest album, A Great Day in Newcastle.

The signing kicked off celebrations ahead of the 2026 Mercury Prize, which will take place at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena on Thursday 22 October, with Knats shortlisted for the prestigious Album of the Year award.
Released in May 2026 on Fontana Records, A Great Day in Newcastle is the band’s second album and is firmly rooted in the city and wider North East, showcasing Knats’ distinctive ‘Geordie Jazz’ sound. Produced by Geordie Greep, the album includes singles ‘Wor Jackie’ and ‘Never Gonna Be A Boxer’.

Formed in Newcastle by lifelong friends Stan Woodward and King David-Ike Elechi, Knats have built a growing reputation for their energetic fusion of jazz, rock and groove-led sounds, putting Newcastle firmly at the heart of their music.
Helen Cowie, Centre Director at Eldon Square, said: “It was fantastic to welcome Knats to Eldon Square and kick off the city’s Mercury Prize celebrations. Newcastle has an incredible music scene, so we’re proud to be celebrating homegrown talent right here in the heart of the city.”

The appearance forms part of Eldon Square’s celebrations around the Mercury Prize coming to Newcastle. Find out more about the Mercury Prize activity taking place at Eldon Square here: https://eldonsquare.co.uk/mercury-prize-returns-to-newcastle/
