Newcastle’s My Delhi wins Best Takeaway Award

  • With restaurants in Newcastle and Sunderland, My Delhi was crowned The Best Takeaway in the North East at the Just Eat Restaurant Awards.
  • Masked Singer host and comedian, Joel Dommet, hosted the star-studded award ceremony which championed restaurants supporting those in need, working to reduce their environmental impact, or simply raise the bar

Those on the hunt for North East’s very best food spots need to look no further. Just Eat last night unveiled the best takeaway and restaurants across the UK at the coveted Just Eat Restaurant Awards.

Returning for a seventh year, the Just Eat Restaurant Awards, formerly the British Takeaway Awards, championed the hardworking and passionate individuals delivering unforgettable food and going above and beyond for the community they serve.

My Delhi, based in Newcastle and Sunderland, well-deservedly won the Best Takeaway in the North East Award. The last 12 months have been a whirlwind for owners Shah Amin and Gaurav Dayal who have scooped multiple awards this year for their authentic dishes, inspired by the street food in Delhi. Shah and Gaurav also go above and beyond to serve their community, proudly delivering free food packages to those in need, including elderly groups, school children and individuals with learning difficulties.

My Delhi, was recognised alongside locally-loved takeaways and restaurant brands from across the UK, at a star-studded ceremony at The Londoner Hotel, in London’s West End.

Hosted by TV presenter and comedian Joel Dommett, among the hundreds of guests were some familiar faces who showed their appreciation for the nation’s favourite restaurants. Celebrity guests included, fittingly, the first dates maître d – Fred Siriex; Love Island stars – Tasha Ghouri and Andrew Le Page and TV personalities and podcasters – Oliver Proudlock and Emma Connolly. As well as Just Eat’s foodie judging panel: fashion guru-turned-TV chef – Gok Wan; Chef and Great British Menu judge, Andi Oliver; and Michelin-trained, TikTok sensationPoppy o’Toole.

Gaurav Goyal, Neha Goyal, Elahi Amin, Shah Amin and Gaurav Dayal, owners of My Delhi commented by Gaurav Goyal: “Wow! The My Delhi World gets even bigger today. For us the food sector has always been a passion, we want to make everyone’s food experience go to the next level. Today, our experience has gone to the next level. Just Eat is a market leader in the food sector, so for them to recognise us and give us this award means a great deal to us. We want to thank all our customers, and also the critics who have helped us to improve.”

Chi Onwurah, MP for Newcastle upon Tyne Central said: I am delighted to see that My Delhi on Clayton Street has been named Best Takeaway in the North East by Just Eat. I know their food is fantastic and they’re community-focused people, going the extra mile to provide food for people in need. They are worthy winners and I hope we see visitors to Newcastle from across the region to try their amazing dishes!”

Also new to this year were special award categories to recognise even more of the nation’s most-loved restaurants as decided by a public vote. Those awarded include: naturally fast food restaurant Leon (Best Breakfast); northern-based burger brand, Archie’s, (Best Newcomer [on Just Eat]), popular burrito bar, Chipotle (Best Lunch, sponsored by Just Eat For Business) and vegan hog roast eatery Hogless Roast (Best Vegan). The judges also had the tasty task of trying London’s Favourite Dish and commended South London crispy fried chicken brand, Other Side Fried for “having the best vegan chicken burger” they’ve ever tasted.

Andrew Kenny, Chief Commercial Officer at Just Eat, said: “The Just Eat Restaurant Awards rightly shine a spotlight on the incredible people who not only deliver unforgettable food, but go above and beyond to make an invaluable contribution to our local community and the UK economy. Despite facing sky-high inflation, soaring food and energy bills and continued staff shortages from Brexit and Covid, these restaurants have demonstrated unparalleled resilience, entrepreneurial spirit and grit. Congratulations to all this year’s winners and finalists”.

The Just Eat Restaurant Award winners are selected by a judging panel following a rigorous process comprising a public vote, written submission, and mystery shopping. Regional winners each receive a £1,000 cash prize and a special Just Eat Restaurant Award trophy. Meanwhile, the overall ‘Best Takeaway in Britain’ winner will receive a further £5,000.
