Party like it’s the end of the world… because it is!
Comedy drama THE LAST QUIZ NIGHT ON EARTH by award-winning North East playwright Alison Carr explodes on to the People’s Theatre stage next week!
There’s a massive asteroid on an unstoppable collision course with Earth, so landlady Kathy and quizmaster Rav are putting on the pub quiz to end all pub quizzes (literally!).
As we hurtle towards the apocalypse, a couple of unexpected guests turn up – one hoping to rekindle a teenage romance and the other to air old grievances before it’s too late.
The play promises to be a truly unique night out as it includes a real quiz that audiences are invited to play!
Carr’s play was originally commissioned by Manchester’s Box of Tricks Theatre Company, and its first tour in 2020 was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic.
But the company remounted the play in 2022 and completed a hugely successful tour. It played to sold-out houses and garnered 5-star reviews, and was included in the Guardian Readers’ Favourite Theatre of the Year.
Since then it has gone on to be very popular with amateur group across the country, as well as further afield with productions in America and Australia!
Carr, whose play ‘A Street Like This’ with Unfolding Theatre recently won Performance of the Year at the North East Culture Awards, comments: “It’s really special to have Last Quiz Night in Newcastle, and especially at the People’s which is a place so dear to my heart. The quiz makes it a really different night out at the theatre, and of course there’s drama threaded through as the characters face the small matter of the end of the world!”
Director Kath Frazer adds: “directing something so immersive and interactive brings with it some unique challenges, but we’re all having a lot of fun in rehearsals. Audiences are going to have a blast!”
THE LAST QUIZ NIGHT ON EARTH opens on Monday 12 February in the Studio Theatre. Tickets are returns only. People’s Theatre Box Office: 0191 265 5020 (option 2) / www.peoplestheatre.co.uk
