Making Waves: Jayden Tomlinson

Making Waves: Jayden Tomlinson on Heartbreak, Healing, and Honouring Legacy Through Music

Rising artist Jayden Tomlinson is set to make a heartfelt debut with the release of his first single “Be Mine” on 3rd July—a date steeped in personal meaning. In a candid interview, Jayden opens up about the emotional journey behind the track, his evolving sound, and the team that helped bring his vision to life.

Lyrics Born of Loss

Jayden’s songwriting process began in a place of emotional turmoil following a breakup. “It was the lyrics I came up with first,” he shares. “I had gone through a recent breakup and all the tough times in my life I write about.” From this raw emotional foundation, the rest of the track took shape—an exercise in catharsis that helped him process and reflect. “When you put all of your emotions onto a sheet of paper, it lays everything out for you.”

From Ballad to Rock Anthem

While the song began as a melancholic acoustic ballad, it evolved into something much bolder. “Now the song has a very rock style which is more intriguing but hasn’t lost its emotional touch,” Jayden explains. Initially unsure if his original vision would resonate with wider audiences, he decided to aim high: “I knew I had to make a big splash for my debut single so I decided to try and make waves.”

Collaboration and Craft

Jayden credits much of the track’s strength to the team behind it. He recorded the single at Bishop Auckland College, taking advantage of the student facilities and working under the guidance of producer Dominic McAreavey—whom Jayden describes as “one of the most professional and talented people I’ve worked with.” He was joined by his bandmates: drummer David Miller, bassist Nils Nilsen, and lead guitarist Dylan Swinney. “I doubt the song would be possible if not for them,” he says with gratitude.

Smooth Sailing in the Studio

Despite the emotional weight of the track, Jayden says the recording process was “very smooth sailing.” The support from his band helped him embrace every moment. Hearing the final mix for the first time was a transformative experience: “You don’t realise how good it sounds when it’s all done. All I could think of was I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.”

A Date That Means Everything

The choice to release his debut single on 3rd July wasn’t random—it was a tribute. “About four years ago, I lost someone very close to me who always wanted me to be a musician like him,” Jayden reveals. “Now I’m releasing my own music and I wanted to pay tribute to him… Even if I finished the song in January, I’d save it until then.”

A Message of Hope

Jayden hopes the song resonates with listeners navigating heartbreak. “Even if you go through a breakup and all you want is them, you can always find someone else or move on,” he says, while also leaving the song open to personal interpretation.

Looking Ahead

Jayden’s journey is just beginning. He’s currently recording a new track that’s completely different to anything he’s done before, and he’s loving the creative shift. While no gigs are booked at present, he’s working behind the scenes to get things moving and hopes to release an EP early next year.
