Wed 15 April 2026 – The Gibside Hotel, Whickham
Purely Belter is a movie that captured the hearts of many in the region – and who can forget the famous ‘everything’s a pound!’ sketch?
It was released in the UK cinemas in November 2000 and then released on home video in 2001.
The film itself was missed by most of the nation, as Billy Elliott hugely overshadowed it, as it was released just two months before, in September 2000.
However, for those who know about it – it has gained a cult North-East following and has become a firm favourite to many!
Chris Cross said: “I was raised in the 90’s and for many other Geordies, Purely Belter was watched countless times on the telly at home.
it’s one of my own favourite films – the perfect combination of local pride, British comedy and raw grit. I’ll not let the 25th Anniversary celebrations sneak under the radar!
The hype around this event has been very exciting, with lots of messages from people sharing their stories and memories of the movie.
Only this week, an ORIGINAL part-script has surfaced, which was used on set by actor, Val McLane.
Since it’s a draft script, there’s not only classic scenes from the movie in there, but also lots of lines and scenes that didn’t get used in the final film, too.
These parts of the script have never been seen by the public, so it’s absolutely fascinating to look through!
I can’t wait to watch the film again, alongside the actors who starred in it – and it’s all to raise money for two great local charities.
Everyone who comes along will be in for a Purely Belter evening indeed – with lots of surprises up my sleeves, on the night! Typical magician, eh!”
Cross also organised a star-studded 18th birthday party for the film in 2017, which saw Tim Healy and other cast members assemble for the celebrations.
A viral video was made to promote the 2017 event, too, which saw the original star of the film, Chris Beattie, reprise his role as ‘Gerry’ – and Chris Cross filled the boots of ‘Sewell’ 18 years later.
This special draft script, signed by Val, will join other pieces of Geordie memorabilia, to be raffled on the night, with all proceeds going to The Alan shearer Centre.
Get your tickets booked quickly, they’ll move faster than Alan Shearer’s car on the way to Kielder!
All tickets are £20 and all profits will be donated by Chris Cross to The Sir Graham Wylie Foundation.
