A new immersive party night combining the best bits of school life alongside a live band, comedy and games is launching at the Common Room in Newcastle upon Tyne on Friday, November 29th.
Comedian Steffen Peddie, singer Jennifer Hastings, and her band Electric Clubland have come together to create a new style of night out that will deliver a great time.
The pair met while performing on Sunday for Sammy back in 2016 and have been looking to collaborate on a show that entertains audiences with a touch of Cabaret.
When asked about the night, Jennifer explained “My dad worked in TV and theatre as a musical director and I grew up watching professional shows being produced from beginning to end. I now work in the music industry full time, and obviously, Steffen’s a comedian – we’ve pooled our resources but I think we’ve hit on a night that totally goes beyond just ‘“a comedian and band” night.”
Steffen continued, “This is where we blur the lines, you come in your school uniform, or the closest you have to it, the doors open at 7pm and the school bell to take you to assembly rings at 7:30pm… and woe betide anyone who is late!”
Jennifer explained, “It’s a trip to school assembly that turns into something a bit more, a singalong to the school songs we all loved like Sing Hosanna and We Three Kings, the odd lesson or two, a visit from Santa, and then the best school disco where you can dance to the songs you know and loved growing up.”
Steffen replied, “That’s just the outline, we have some other things happening on the night to make it that little bit special, and the fact that you come to take part and will all be treated like the pupils at a school adds to the fun. Mind you we never had a full bar when I went to school, but it would have made maths more interesting!”
“The Common Room location is stunning, it’s like a private school mixed with Hogwarts so you will be spirited back in years just entering the room. I can’t wait for everyone to see what we have planned,” added Jennifer.
Publicity Information from Flyer
Think back… sitting in rows cross-legged on the parquet floor (only if you went to a posh school), the head teacher looming over you, the old lady (usually someone’s musical Gran)
sitting at the upright piano, the overhead projector, tea towels on your head, one-eyed baby Jesus shoved in a cardboard box with some stale hay… Those were the days.
This immersive event will take you back to all the best bits of the school assembly at
Christmas, set in the grand Wood Hall at the Common Room, its walls lined with oak
panelling, real fireplaces, antique bookcases, and spiralling iron staircases (giving all the Harry Potter Great Hall feels).
But this time you get to grab a space on the bench, get a round in from the bar and let legendary north-east comedian Steffen Peddie take you on a hilarious trip back in time as the school Head Master, chocker-block with singalongs of assembly classics like One More Step Along the World I Go & Sing Hosanna PLUS Nativity Bangers like Away In A Manger & We Three Kings.
Obviously, you can’t round off a back-to-school event without a festive school disco and our 7-piece live band, Electric Clubland, will have you busting out your best Running Man and MC Hammer moves, not forgetting a whole-school rendition of Whigfield’s Saturday Night routine (don’t lie, you still know it off by heart).
So get your Kickers laced up, your Berol Handwriting Pen ready and your PE kit in a Jane Norman carrier bag, cos SCHOOL RULES. IDST.
