A grate afternoon for cheese lovers

The late Summer Bank Holiday weekend will prove to be a cracking treat for cheese lovers as the team from Restaurant Pine, Northumberland, joins forces with grate in Jesmond, Newcastle, to celebrate Great British Cheese as they host a ‘grate afternoon’ on Sunday 31st August between 12pm and 3pm.

This unique pop-up experience will feature a curated menu of three indulgent cheese-based snacks, designed and prepared by Cal Byerley and Ian Waller. Each bite-size creation will shine a spotlight on Britain’s world-class cheeses, paired with seasonal, local ingredients to bring out the best of every bite.

The exclusive snack menu includes:

Beetroot, Doddington Cheddar & Walnuts

Parsnip, Goat’s Cheese, Verbena & Caramel

Sourdough, Baron Bigod & Pine’s House Pickles

Tickets are priced at £25 per person and can be reserved at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/grate-x-pine-registration-1571416251309?aff=oddtdtcreator

Each dish champions a standout British cheese, chosen from grate’s carefully curated selection of over 70 artisan cheeses.

To enhance the experience further, Vanessa Stoltz, Pine’s head sommelier, will be on hand to pour a selection of wines by the glass, which guests can purchase from the shop counter. Each wine is grown and produced entirely in the UK, and thoughtfully paired to complement the cheese-based snacks, offering a perfect marriage of flavours.

Moz Murphy, owner of grate, shared her excitement: “I’m thrilled to be hosting our very first ‘grate afternoon’. It’s a fantastic opportunity to introduce guests to some of the UK’s most exceptional cheeses in a fun and accessible way, with the added flair of Pine’s imaginative and thoughtful cooking. This event is all about celebrating the richness of British produce, and cheese lovers are in for a real treat.”

Ian Waller, head chef at Pine, added: “grate is such a brilliant shop – it’s a treasure trove for anyone who loves cheese. We’re all excited about working with Moz and the team to create something special for this event. Expect bold flavours, clever pairings, and a little Pine magic.”

Guests will also have the opportunity to browse and purchase from grate’s extensive range, including crackers, chutneys, and even specialist books for those eager to expand their knowledge of cheese.

Whether you’re a seasoned cheese aficionado or simply curious to try something new, ‘grate afternoon’ promises a relaxed and flavour-packed experience, celebrating the best of British craftsmanship, on the plate and in the glass.
