Cast announced for Dogs On The Metro

Last updated:

A stellar cast has been announced for electrifying new play Dogs On The
Metro which premieres at Live Theatre from Thursday 1 to Saturday 17
May 2025. Bringing North East Playwriting Award winner Emilie Robson’s
drama to life are Sarah Balfour (Dead Canny) and Dean Logan (Gerry &
Sewell).

This gripping portrait of young lives by Emilie Robson and directed by
Maria Crocker takes audiences on an unforgettable journey through
friendship, lost youth and people watching. The story follows friends Jen
and Dean over a series of days, months and years as they travel back and
forth on the Metro system. As the carriage hurtles on they navigate their
way through the tunnels of memory and perception to come to terms with a
pivotal event that changes everything.

The role of Jen is played by Sarah Balfour. Sarah is originally from South
Sheilds and trained at ALRA South. Her credits include: Dead Canny
(DAVE/UKTV), Slow Horses (Apple TV), Christmas Crackers (Live
Theatre), Mary Stuart (West End) and PICA (BBC Radio 4).

Wallsend born Dean Logan takes on the role of Dean. Dean, a former
member of Live Youth Theatre, has worked as a professional actor on
stage, TV, and radio since he was 16. His credits include: Gerry & Sewell
(Theatre Royal Newcastle, Live Theatre and Laurels), A Christmas Carol
(NTC tour), Coronation Street (ITV), Doctors (BBC) and Homefront (BBC
Radio 4).

Live Theatre’s Artistic Director, Jack McNamara said: “From its very first
line it’s clear that Dogs On The Metro is written by a major new voice. The
dialogue is electrifying and deeply of the region. To pull something off this
sharp, focused and intense you need a star director and two star actors
and luckily we have all three here in Maria, Sarah and Dean.”

Director Maria Crocker Said “As soon as I read Emilie’s play, I knew I
wanted to direct it. I was immediately drawn in by the laser sharp, witty
dialogue, that delicately intertwines humour with a much heavier story. The
charming, funny voices of the two young characters feel incredibly
authentic and deeply connected to the North East, and yet the themes
ripple much wider than Newcastle. Emilie has tapped into a culture that
many of us, particularly women, experience in our youth, and it’s vital that
we give these stories the space to be heard. I can’t wait to bring it to life
with this brilliant team.”

Writer Emilie Robson added: “I’m absolutely delighted that Dogs on the
Metro is being produced by Live Theatre. I couldn’t think of a better home
for the play or a better team to help bring it to life.”
