A Memorable Northumberland Plate Day full of Smiles, Style, and Spectacular Racing

It was a day of top-class sport, style, and no shortage of smiles and laughter, as Plate Day brought entertainment to thousands at Newcastle Racecourse on Saturday 29th June 2024.

Who Won:

The highlight of the day was the Northumberland Plate race worth £150,000, which saw a thrilling victory by Onesmoothoperator, ridden by Connor Beasley, trained by Brian Ellison and Owned by Patrick Boyle. The crowd erupted in cheers as the horse crossed the finish line, cementing its place in the history of this prestigious race.

Connor Beasley told us how he felt about winning the Northumberland Plate; “It’s an absolute delight, a big race to win, one of mine and Brian’s local tracks. He did really well, travelled around lovely and when I asked him to quicken, he did it really nicely. A very good story all come together.”

Brian Ellison also commented on the win: “We’ve wanted to win this for a long time, and we knew we had him right. What a hell of a gallop, he’s some animal. I don’t think it’s quite sunk in yet, I’m absolutely over the moon, its fantastic! We’re going back to the owners after this for some champagne.”

Brian was also born on Plate Day, making this win a little bit more special for him, especially since it was one of his home tracks.

The Fashion:

The Jenningsbet Northumberland Plate Day was also a spectacle of elegance, sophistication and style, with racegoers showcasing an array of glamorous outfits and stylish suits. The fashion stakes were high, with attendees donning everything from elegant dresses to bold and vibrant colours and a huge number of eye-catching fascinators. The men especially outdid themselves this year with colour-matched ties and designer suits, and the ladies, as always, dressed to impress, creating a sea of colours and styles across the racecourse.

We also spoke to some guests who attended the 2024 Jenningsbet Northumberland Plate Day;

Claire from Gateshead said, “We meet every year for the races and have been coming for the past 15 years. It’s a really special day for all of us and a great excuse for a girly get-together, where we can get dressed up, have a natter, enjoy the atmosphere, and hopefully win some money. It’s an absolutely fabulous day.”

Dan, Jake, and Nick from South Wales and Newcastle said, “We came to the Northumberland Plate last year and bought the pod hospitality package, which we really enjoyed, so we’ve returned this year for another great day. The hospitality at Newcastle Racecourse always makes our day at the races extra special. It’s a day filled with friends, family and a huge amount of fun. We’ve won some, and we’ve lost some, but it’s all about the experience.”

Melissa from Blyth said; “We’ve been coming to the races at Newcastle for about 10 years now, and it’s always an amazing day out. Today we’re celebrating one of our friend’s 50th Birthdays and love dressing up and having a good laugh with each other. There is no other feeling like being at the races, it’s like a different world here, a bubble of excitement and glamour.”

Newcastle Racecourse was brimmed with excitement, with an estimated 10,000 people attending. The atmosphere was electric as both regulars and newcomers mingled, took photos, and enjoyed the races with some first-class hospitality.

Weather on the Day:
The day started with a blanket of clouds overhead, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the racegoers. Despite the overcast skies, the temperature remained pleasant, and the attendees were undeterred in their stylish outfits. The grey skies provided a dramatic backdrop to the thrilling races, and the atmosphere remained lively and vibrant throughout the day, with everyone captivated by the races and the post-race entertainment by Hacienda Classical.

The day concluded with an unforgettable performance by Hacienda Classical, the widely acclaimed live orchestral clubbing series featuring DJ Graeme Park, Mike Pickering and orchestra conductor Tim Crooks. The orchestra had the crowd dancing and singing along to some iconic dance classics, creating a perfect finish to an already spectacular day.

Paul Elliott, Executive Director of Newcastle Racecourse commented on the success of Northumberland Plate saying;“We’ve had another truly amazing day at Newcastle Racecourse, enjoyed by all. The atmosphere was fantastic, with everyone coming together to celebrate this special event. We’re already looking forward to welcoming everyone again in just under a month for the Gainford Group Ladies’ Day. Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make this day special.”

For those who couldn’t attend the Jenningsbet Northumberland Plate Day, mark your calendars and dust off your dresses and fascinators for this year’s Gainford Group Ladies’ Day on Saturday 27th July, where the racing action will be high and the fashion stakes even higher. After the races, live music from the popular Bongo’s Bingo will also be a highlight of the day, ensuring the fun continues with their electrifying and unpredictable fun and surprises.
