Tyne Theatre & Opera House appoints local artist for commissioned mural Lucy Wilkinson to lead community workshops as part of heritage mural commission for the 1867 Hall.

Tyne Theatre & Opera House are delighted to have appointed local artist Lucy Wilkinson to
complete their first Artist Commission – a painted mural based on the theatre’s heritage that
will fill a wall in the venue’s recently developed 1867 Hall.

The design will feature a view of the auditorium, looking towards the stage and highlighting
details of the auditorium décor. The finished mural will provide a point of interest for those using the Hall during both daytime sessions and evening performances, encouraging the public to discuss the theatre’s history and its ongoing heritage work.

The commission includes two community workshops where members of the public are invitedto join Lucy for a practical, hands-on session.

Using assets from our theatre archives – such as historic playbills, programmes, stenciled signs, and examples of theatrical and musical writing – Lucy will guide participants in creating printed lino and collagraph artwork that will form part of the final mural.

Head of Community Engagement & Participation, Rachel Snape, says:

“We are absolutely thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity to a local artist, and to have a
unique piece of artwork that not only highlights the theatre’s history and heritage but also
allows our communities to collaborate and take part in the making.”

If you are interested in joining the free community sessions on Monday 13 April and Thursday
23 April between 10am-1pm please book via the theatre’s website.

The sessions are open to everyone and suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience. Refreshments will be provided, and the 1867 Café Bar will be open after the workshop for lunch. This project is supported by Newcastle Creative Central.

Accessibility and Participation

We want these workshops to be welcoming and accessible to as many people as possible.
We can provide step-free access to the 1867 Hall via our Theatre Box Office entrance. There
is also a stair lift available from the 1867 Cafe Bar to the Hall. Lift access is available to an
accessible toilet from the 1867 Cafe Bar. Quiet spaces can be provided for those who need
them. We ask that any accessibility requirements are communicated to our team in advance of attending any workshop or event.

The sessions are open to everyone, and are suitable for all experience levels. Booking is
required as spaces are limited. Carers and support workers are welcome, but must request
their own ticket if they would like to participate.

If you have any questions about access or would like to discuss your needs before attending,
please contact our Box Office team via email at ticketing@ttoh.uk or by phone on 0191 243 1171.
