Review: Oktoberfest at Times Square, Newcastle

Don your dirndls and lather up your lederhosen, Oktoberfest is back at Times Square in Newcastle for the weekends leading up to Halloween. It is always a celebrated feature and this year is no different. The locals were out in force and in fine fettle yesterday as the doors opened on the Bavarian inspired event for the annual festival of the oompa bands and sausage and beer guzzling madness.

The atmosphere was outstanding this evening with good hearted reverie and the party started with festive pop favourites. Everyone was in holiday spirit as they held their steins aloft, danced as if no one was watching, and sang their hearts out to Sweet Caroline, Come on Eileen, and other celebratory classics.

The technical set up (Hi-Lights) was excellent with more moving lights than you can shake a pretzel at and an excellent sound system which added to the party spirit. The food offering was a little disappointing with only bratwurst, various toppings and chips available on site this evening. The drinks, however, were much more in abundance with wines, German lagers, and spirits all in fine flow. I struggle to conceive of any self-respecting Oktoberfest without deliciously salt encrusted and freshly baked pretzels but perhaps that is just me.

The highlight of the evening for me were the incredibly talented musicians appropriately called Brasswürst  who entertained the gathered revellers with british classics in the German Oompa Band style and really got the tent bouncing. This five piece band are renowned for bringing the house down at festivals up and down the country and it does not surprise me in the slightest that the members of Brasswürst are all alumni of the Royal Northern College of Music. The quality of the brass playing was outstanding and really topped off a thoroughly enjoyable evening in the heart of Newcastle. Ein prosit to each and every one of you!

Oktoberfest is here for a good time but not a long time and the tickets fly out so if you want a great night out then do not hang about.

Kauf your Tickets ein from https://www.oktoberfest.org.uk/newcastle and eat, drink and be merry München style every weekend in October.
