Exploring Newcastle: Top Attractions and Entertainment in the City

Last updated:

Packed with nightlife, sports and galleries, this northern city is actually a solid option for a fun-filled destination. There’s a lot to like for everyone in fact, with day trips, couples options and more, all readily available. So, if you’re considering a visit to Newcastle, what kind of things can you get up to? Let’s take a look.

Exploring inside

There are many galleries and museums to explore up in Newcastle. For one, if you want something contemporary, then the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art is a great starting point. It’s inside an old flour mill and is right on the Tyne giving you stunning views of the city as well. Alternatively, The Biscuit Factory also offers an eclectic mix of contemporary artworks, but is also great for its brunch menu.

Joining for sports

If sports is your thing, then you can head to St James’ Park, which is home to Newcastle’s football team, the Magpies. The stadium was built in 1892 and is one of the largest football stadiums in the UK. If you can time your trip right, why not go when there is a game rather than simply visiting the stadium. You’ll get a better feel for the vibe and the atmosphere if you do, though a behind-the-scenes tour is also a lot of fun.

Heading out into nature

Up north, the countryside is a lot more rugged and exciting. You’re also right next to the freezing cold North Sea. If you want to really test your mettle, then the Ice-Dip Social is one way to do this. Take the plunge into the sea, then hit up a sauna and grab some scran. The cold immersion experience runs from October to March and is something to really enjoy.

For something a little less adventurous, and an outing that appeals to all, Rising Sun Country Park is stunning in summer. At 400 acres, this nature reserve has multiple habitats, including woodland, grassland and wetlands with a bird hide for those interested in spotting local birds.

Rained off

Being up north, and depending when in the year you go, you may find that the inclement weather is not conducive to an outside jaunt. In days like these, there are plenty of things to be doing indoors. Of course, you can stay snuggled up in your hotel room and play at one of the top UK slot sites rather than explore. But you could also go and explore Newcastle Castle. This old castle is what gave the city its name, back in the day of course. It’s a great day out and a fun way to learn about the history of this area.

Finally, if you want something else cultural, head to the Ouseburn. This is where you can find great bars, pubs and brunch spots. It’s a great place to wonder around, find fun eateries and also visit the community farm where kids can help out.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Newcastle. Depending who you’re with, and how long you’ve got, there’s plenty more to see and do.
