Jimmy Constable on 911, the Kubix Arena Tour, and Timeless Pop Magic
For fans of 90s pop, 911 needs no introduction. With chart-topping hits like Bodyshakin’ and A Little Bit More, the trio—Jimmy Constable, Lee Brennan, and Spike Dawbarn—dominated the airwaves and filled arenas with their infectious energy and boy-next-door charm. As they gear up for the highly anticipated Kubix Arena Tour, 911 is ready to bring the nostalgia, joined by a lineup of fellow 90s legends.
I had the pleasure of catching up with Jimmy Constable to discuss his journey with 911, the magic of performing live, and how the band continues to evolve while staying true to their roots. From heartfelt reflections on their early days to exciting plans for the future, Jimmy offers a candid glimpse into life on and off the stage.
Here’s what he had to say:
—
V: Looking back at the 90s, what do you remember most fondly about the early days of 911?
Jimmy: Honestly, it’s got to be how it all started. Spike and I were dancers on tv show The Hit Man and Her, and that’s how we got to know each other. One day, we were chatting over coffee, and the idea of forming a band came up. We later auditioned Lee and started from the ground up—touring schools, clubs, and anywhere we could build an audience. Those early days were incredible. We were just kids setting out on this wild journey, building everything from scratch. Those memories are priceless.
V: What song or moment from your career best captures the energy of the 90s for you?
Jimmy: That’s a tough one, but I’d have to go with Bodyshakin’. It’s so full of energy and fun, which really sums up the vibe of that era. Any of our up-tempo tracks, though, bring back that sense of excitement.
V: What’s your favourite 911 track? Is there one you’re particularly proud of?
Jimmy: That would be I Do. I wrote it for my wife, so it’s really close to my heart. It’s really special for me.
V: How does it feel to return to the big stage alongside other 90s icons?
Jimmy: It’s brilliant, but to be honest, we’ve never really left the stage. We’ve been performing consistently, especially in Asia, where we’re still really big. Coming back home to perform is a bit different, though. It’s great to be closer to my family while connecting with UK fans.
As for sharing the stage with other 90s acts, it’s fantastic. Back in the day, magazines would pit us against each other, creating rivalries that didn’t really exist. It’s so different now. Social media has changed the game, and we all just get on. There’s no pressure about chart positions anymore—it’s all about having a good time and putting on a great show.
V: What sort of music do you listen to? Any current artists that inspire you?
Jimmy: I love big voices. Artists like Stevie Wonder, Boyz II Men, and Brian McKnight are my go-to’s—just incredible, soulful voices. My daughter’s really into Sabrina Carpenter, and I’ve got to admit, I don’t mind her either! Lee, on the other hand, is a total pop addict—he can’t get enough of it!
V: Are there any surprising elements in the set for the Kubix tour?
Jimmy: I think fans might be surprised that we’re still breakdancing! Maybe not quite as energetically as we did back in the day, but we’re still giving it everything we’ve got. The show is big, bold, and packed with energy—just like it’s always been.
