Tina Turner The Musical
Invited| Review by Aaron Whittington
Tina: The Tina Turner Musical came Rollin’ into the Sunderland Empire this week, and some would say it’s Simply The Best!
We all know the music, but this production shows us the journey and experiences that shaped Tina’s life, portraying her resilience and determination in the face of adversity and abuse. The storytelling is both heartfelt and inspiring, leaving myself and the audience with an appreciation of Turners perseverance which turned her into a musical legend. I even learned things that I didn’t realise about her career and life too.

The staging of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical is both bold and dynamic, cleverly designed to move through the various scenes. From the smoky Southern beginnings in Nutbush to the glittering stadiums of her global fame, each scene shift is seamless. The use of lighting plays a key role— pulsing with the beat during high-octane numbers and dimming to evoke slower, more intimate moments. Set pieces glide in and out, never distracting but always enhancing the story’s rhythm. Combined visuals and projections, the stage becomes itself aids Tina’s journey.
Elle Ma-Kinga N’Zuzi plays the lead role for press night fabulously. This lady has a powerhouse of a voice, displayed in many show worthy moments. However my personal favourite was when she gave her rendition of River Deep, Mountain High. There was something that just stood out for me in this moment from N’Zuzi. She emblazons female power and knowing her worth. Maybe something learned from the experiences as a young girl growing up and the fight she had throughout her life to succeed – which we see play out on stage with a fierce determination to succeed whatever the odds.

A shoutout also goes to our young Anna Mae Bullock Chilean Ochuba-Okafor who gives us a better of a voice too for one at such a young age!
David King-Yombo cleverly portrays his role of Ike Turner. A flash, celebrity hungry man, albeit a man not without talent. Using his reputation to get his way with the ladies, but what came across under it all was a desperate man longing to be remembered in history. Such is the appearance this physical abuser gave, he was one with the public and another to Tina in private. King-Yombo switched these moods quickly and that can be felt within the scenes.
Supporting cast were great in their roles too, so cannot be forgotten and contribute hugely to this in both choreography and singing.
Showcasing a cast that deliver each performance with high energy and passion, the musical includes plenty of hits and music, including “Proud Mary,” “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” “Simply the Best,” Tonight,” You’ll find yourself toe tapping or silently singing to yourself.

As I mentioned earlier, I never actually knew the full story of Tina Turner. Success at a young age, a ‘forced’ marriage to Ike Turner, having to experience becoming a survivor of domestic abuse, something she was exposed to witnessing herself from a young age to then receiving herself. To then make it as she did in her 40+ era, makes this story all the more fascinating and engaging. Tina Turner is a musical legend and will be remembered as such, but the story behind it is an emotional rollercoaster.
The finalé is fantastic. Back to where it started. Get ready for a powerful performance, a great big flash of light, an encore and dancing galore!
For those seeking a great musical experience that combines great performances, a compelling story, and the timeless music of a legend, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical is an unmissable show. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to her music, this production promises to deliver an unforgettable night at the Sunderland Empire.
Be warned this is a long show! 2hrs 45 mins excluding interval. So for a 7.30pm start, expect to be leaving around 10.30pm.
